Discipline and regimentation enable professionalism in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), with Air Warrant Officers (AWOs) and Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) being mentors of the Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) Cadre. This informs ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline and regimentation by empowering the AWOs and RSMs as effective leaders for enhanced operational effectiveness. To this end, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar earlier today, 26 November 2024, chaired a Conference for AWOs and RSMs serving in various units across the nation. In his opening remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the significance of mentorship in the NAF, in view of the vast experience and knowledge that the AWOs, RSMs and other Senior NCOs possess. Expressing concern over the observed decline in mentoring within the NCO Cadre over the years, the CAS urged AWOs and RSMs to revive the culture of mentorship in their various units. He also reminded the AWOs and RSMs that as the link between the Officers’ Cadre and the Other Ranks, they must be impartial in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Speaking further, the CAS underscored the importance of maintaining and upholding the high standards of discipline and noted that AWOs and RSMs have the responsibility to ensure that airmen and airwomen under their command remain disciplined in the discharge of their duties. "Today’s conference is more than a review of the past one year; it is a strategic dialogue to consolidate our gains, critically examine any shortcomings and chart our course forward. Importantly, it’s an avenue to interact and get feedback from you on issues affecting the airmen/airwomen in the NAF. My focus is to ensure that all stakeholders are well-informed and leadership is strengthened at every level in the NAF for operational success."
The CAS also emphasized the importance of AWOs and RSMs being thoroughly familiar with his Command Philosophy, as their roles are pivotal to its successful implementation. He further stressed that their dedication and leadership at various levels significantly contribute to achieving the overall goals and objectives of the Nigerian Air Force.
Highlights of the event included briefs by the AWOs and RSMs on activities in their various Areas of Responsibility, as well as a robust and engaging interactive session.
